The conventional advice is about better time management, practising mindfulness, or taking a digital detox. And while those things can help the surface-level symptoms, they rarely address the deep, underlying issue. If you’re a professional - especially one who has had to work harder to claim your space, like many in the LGBTQ+ community - your burnout isn’t a personal flaw. It’s a signal from your entire system that you are successfully executing a set of rules and a definition of success that was never truly yours.

This leads us to adopt a linear, unsustainable definition of success: more money, a higher title, fewer mistakes, and constant availability. We pursue these goals with incredible drive, confusing constant busyness with genuine purpose. We become masters at this game, and that’s precisely why we burn out - we’ve excelled at draining ourselves completely.

It’s crucial to understand that this drive is rooted in survival. It’s an old coping strategy that likely helped you achieve safety, validation, and a sense of belonging at a time when you needed it most. But those old strategies are now counterproductive. They keep you locked in a cycle of striving that ignores your authentic needs.

This is the point where traditional coaching can sometimes fall short, offering a template or a quick tool to manage the surface behaviour. However, to truly stop the cycle, you need to be able to safely examine those deep, entrenched drivers. We need to look beyond the schedule and into the story you’ve been living out.
